People Living With Cancer ["PLWC"] aims to develop a national support system for those who have been diagnosed and who are living with cancer. The organisation aims to assist cancer patients and their families in dealing with:
  • their diagnosis and treatment;
  • emotional and psychological issues;
  • legal, social and financial issues; and
  • living with, and beyond the treatment of cancer.

  Reasons To Become  A Buddy
Make your experience as a person
   living with cancer relevant by giving
   something back to new cancer patients.
Provide hope to others facing this new
   challenge
Your story can assist new patients
   starting their journey with cancer
Cancer survivorship is not easy, and the
   support Buddies provide to each other is
   important
Cancer Buddies assist new cancer
   patients to feel empowered and start
   teaching new patients to be “patient
   active”
Cancer Buddies advocate for cancer
   patients rights by giving voice to their
   concerns and fears

PLWC intends to achieve its objectives by using the services of carefully selected and trained volunteers. PLWC volunteers will be cancer survivors who are carefully selected and trained to provide support and up-to-date information, including literature, for the patient and their loved ones.

Talking with a specially trained PLWC volunteer can provide the patient and his or her family with a measure of comfort and an opportunity for emotional grounding and informed decision making, during what is often an exceptionally stressful time. Volunteers will encourage the patient and their loved ones to express their feelings, to verbalise their fears and concerns, and to ask questions of someone who is knowledgeable and genuinely empathetic.

PLWC volunteers also offer hope because they themselves have survived the disease and have regained their lives.

PLWC volunteers also offer hope because they themselves have survived the disease and have regained their lives. Volunteers will also be trained to perform various management functions needed to run the operation as well as a number of different support roles which relate to administration, organisation and facilitation of disease specific support groups, one on one support, distribution of materials and marketing of the organisation to hospitals, clinics, and doctors, as well as the organisation of Survivors Day and other functions.

PLWC will collaborate with other cancer support organisations, and has the full support and endorsement of the Cancer Association of South Africa (“CANSA”).
